In this trainee spotlight series, we're proud to highlight the stories of our dedicated students, each of whom brings unique backgrounds, challenges, and successes to the table. We would like to introduce Steven Underwood, a member of NSTP1 who is committed to mastering the skills necessary to thrive in the ever-evolving world of cybersecurity. In this post, we'll take a closer look at Steven's journey, achievements, and the bright future that lies ahead for him.
How did you find out about NukuDo, and how did you know the program was the right career step for you?
I found NukuDo on Indeed, I knew the program was the right choice for me almost instantly when reading the description. Ever since I first started creating web applications, I have been interested in how to ensure they are secure. Finding a training program that would give me the knowledge and skills to be able to test and find the flaws in systems and applications really excited me.
What motivated you to make the leap into the cybersecurity industry?
The challenge was a major motivator for me to join the cybersecurity industry. I thrive on solving complex problems and enjoy figuring out how to address security issues. I’ve always had a passion for technology, and cybersecurity is a field that allows me to push my skills to the limit.
What has been the best memory you have made so far in the program?
This program has created many wonderful memories, but I would say the best memory I have would be during the mid-term assignment. After having spent the previous weeks learning about penetration testing. Being able to put everything together, find the initial exploit and gaining the reverse shell was just amazing.
What is the biggest challenge you have faced so far in the program?
The biggest challenge I’ve faced has been supporting my hypotheses of events using logs. During the summation exercise I was able to formulate an idea of what occurred but proving it through logs was something I struggled with. To overcome this, I have spent more time studying log reading and analysis to better understand how to support my findings with solid evidence.
What are your cybersecurity career goals?
In the next 5 to 10 years, I aim to transition into the management side of cybersecurity, where I can leverage my knowledge to build innovative security strategies. While I want to specialize in offensive security, my goal is to remain well-rounded, gaining expertise in both offensive and defensive techniques. Ultimately, my end goal is to move into a leadership role as a CISO, where I can oversee security strategies and ensure my organizations is well-protected from emerging threats.
What advice would you give to future trainees?
Not everything is going to work the first time – or even the tenth time – you try something, so it’s crucial to figure out why things aren’t working, keep pushing forward, or when to try something else. The program moves quickly, and there will be times when things don’t make sense, or you might feel overwhelmed. My advice is to stick with it, even when things get tough. Staying with the program will equip you with the knowledge you need to succeed, and it’s absolutely worth the effort in the end.
