Women in Cybersecurity: Breaking Barriers and Building Careers

The cybersecurity industry, like many tech fields, has historically been male-dominated. However, that narrative is beginning to change as more women are entering the cybersecurity workforce, breaking down barriers, and shaping the future of digital security. While there is still progress to be made, women from all backgrounds are finding their place in the field and contributing to a more inclusive and diverse cybersecurity landscape.

At NukuDo, we are proud to support and empower female students who are making bold strides in overcoming challenges but also redefining what it means to be a cybersecurity professional. This blog explores the current state of women in cybersecurity, the challenges they face, while looking to one of our emerging female talents, Ellie, for her insights into the industry.

The Importance of Diversity in Cybersecurity

Cybersecurity isn’t just about technology—it’s about understanding human behavior, anticipating risks, and solving complex problems. A diverse workforce brings different perspectives, which are essential for defending against a wide range of cyber threats. Research shows that diverse teams are more innovative and effective in tackling challenges, making the case for why cybersecurity needs more women.

How do you think more women can be encouraged to enter the cybersecurity field?

"Right now, cybersecurity is dominated by men, who make up about 76% of the field but the working population is only 43% male. When leaders look around at their teams they should question how or why the dynamic of the team does not reflect the workforce. They should consider how the organization can create equity in tangible ways. For example, creating a hiring panel instead of leaving hiring to HR, the direct manager and the department head. Create a panel that includes people from different divisions in the organization to offer unique perspectives. The panel should be 50% men and 50% women from employees at all levels. As a member of WiCys (Women in Cybersecurity), I have conversations with women all over the country who are experiencing a lot of the same obstacles in cybersecurity. If we want to encourage women, then we need diversity of thought in the hiring process because the women are already there, but they need real opportunities."

In what ways do you feel cybersecurity benefits from having more women in the workforce?

"Diversity of thought is invaluable to an organization. The companies that are renowned for innovation, Amazon and Apple, for example, prioritize diversity of thought and inclusion above everything else. Cybersecurity is a field that battles some of the most creative minds to keep the internet and information secure. It's similar to the "two brains are better than one" approach."

Challenges Women Face in Cybersecurity

While the gender gap in cybersecurity is closing, women still face significant challenges that need to be addressed. Gender bias and stereotypes are a persistent challenge for women in cybersecurity. Despite having the necessary skills and qualifications, women often face unconscious biases that undermine their contributions. These biases can manifest in assumptions that women are less technically capable than their male counterparts, leading to fewer opportunities for leadership roles or technical assignments. These stereotypes further discourage women from entering or advancing within the industry, creating a self-perpetuating cycle that limits diversity and innovation in cybersecurity teams.

What advice would you give to other women considering a career in cybersecurity?

"Find your community. If you are neurodivergent, from the Midwest, and have six dogs, find people in cybersecurity who share your traits or interests. These are the people who help you stay encouraged when you face difficult challenges because they can relate to you but still offer valuable insight. You also need people in your community who are vastly different from you but understand what you do. These are the people that stretch you beyond your comfort zone. Lastly, find two mentors, a peer and someone who is more senior in their role. You are going to feel like you are on an island by yourself at some point in your career, your community reminds you that you are not."

How do you stay motivated and focused when faced with challenges in a male-dominated field?

"I have learned that there will be moments when the very traits that help men move ahead can be the very same traits that women are chastised for having. Biases come from both men and women, which has taught me to focus inward and not on other people. I do my best, learn new things constantly, speak up for myself and treat people how they want to be treated."
