At NukuDo, we take pride in nurturing the next generation of cybersecurity professionals. Today, we’re excited to introduce you to one of our NSTP1 trainees, Ammon D'Alessio. Throughout his journey in our program, Ammon has demonstrated exceptional dedication, skill, and a passion for cybersecurity that will translate into a successful career. In this post, we’ll take a closer look at Ammon's achievements, experiences, and what makes him a rising star in the field and one of the future leaders of cybersecurity.
How did you find out about NukuDo, and how did you know the program was the right career step for you?
I found out about NukuDo while I was filling out numerous job applications and not getting anywhere. I was at my help desk job and feeling stagnant. Once I read the job description, it was really a long shot for me to apply. It seemed too good to be true! I’d be learning skills from industry professionals, getting certifications, and I get PAID? I make more as a student at NukuDo than I did as a high school teacher. It was a perfect fit for someone like me in their 30’s looking for stability and felt uncertain in changing careers. Instead of thinking how I was going to afford 4 years of college and rolling the dice on job interviews, I get paid and work for 3 years while getting a better education. I was ecstatic when I got accepted.
What motivated you to make the leap into the cybersecurity industry?
I was very dissatisfied with the education system as a whole, and as a former high school teacher, I saw this first-hand. I wanted a career that offered more opportunities for growth and mental stimulation. Technology is so pervasive and powerful; it affects every aspect of our lives and society. It fuels progress, and has the capacity to bring us together or tear us apart. I wanted to contribute to the safety and effectiveness of this technology through cybersecurity.
What has been the best memory you have made so far in the program?
Earning the GCIH certification was probably the best memory for me so far, since it really is an external validation of the skills we learned throughout the program and was a tangible way for me to see how far I’ve progressed since March.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced so far in the program?
I initially faced problems with learning python, a concept that didn’t come naturally to me. Immediately trying to incorporate it into other topics was a real challenge. It was really discouraging at first, so I had to overcome some mental hurdles and self-doubt. Staying patient and keeping everything in perspective as I was learning was key. I gained the mental fortitude, practice, and assistance necessary to continue and succeed. Don’t give in to self-doubt, keep going!
What are your cybersecurity career goals?
I’m pretty open to the different career paths in cybersecurity. The dynamic nature of the industry is part of the appeal! Short term, I’d like to get a foothold in the industry and start gaining some operational experience in the workforce. After gaining some operational experience, I’d like to focus on a particular skill set or role to develop specialized skills and distinguish myself. Eventually, I’d like to lead teams or train people in the skills that I’ve refined over the years and contribute to securing our critical technologies.
What advice would you give to future trainees?
For future students considering NukuDo, I offer this advice: embrace the challenges presented. The program is designed to push you to your individual limits, testing your abilities and encouraging growth. It's important to approach difficulties with resilience and a willingness to learn. Even when it's tough, don't give up! They are also assessing how you respond and handle tough situations. Don’t try to look like you’re the smartest in the room; be honest, and be yourself! It's okay to say you don't know something, as long as you are actively trying to learn. Utilize the support of your instructors and peers. I wholeheartedly recommend NukuDo to anyone looking to transition into cybersecurity. The program's comprehensive curriculum, expert instruction, and hands-on approach have been instrumental in shaping my career transition and preparing me for success.
